It’s hard to describe the feeling when standing on top of the Shipka Peak. This is a place of such natural beauty, a place of human triumph and suffering, a place most certainly not to be forgotten.

The Shipka pass, for all its magnificence, is the place where a series of bloody battles occurred from 1877-1878 during the Russo-Turkish war. It is special to the Bulgarian people, as it is the place of a spectacular victory for them and their country. In one of the crucial moments of the conflict, the 7,500-man combined Bulgarian-Russian forces defeated the 40,000-strong Ottoman Empire invaders.

On the day we visited, the air was crisp and clean and I felt I could think with absolute clarity. We climbed to the peak and from all directions looked down upon fields, villages and mountain ranges extending off into the distance. The feathers I had chosen to wear in my hair that day were perfectly in tune with the feeling that I was soaring above the world. As were the amazing hand-carved bone and brass earrings by Kuvera Arts, which were crafted in Bali. Kuvera Arts are also the craftspeople behind the beautiful labradorite pendant necklace I was wearing that day.

And it seemed appropriate to take with me to this special place, a special piece made by a special lady. The suede clutch you see in my hands was made by Andrea Tamaela, originally from the Pacific Islands, who finds herself these days living in The Netherlands. Myself I am Australian, but for the last 10+ years have been moving from country to country and am now finally based in Bulgaria. Both of us through the flutter of a butterfly’s wings so happened to connect, and have collaborated creatively and supported each other’s art ever since. And it has been wonderful.
